National Association of Black Counselors (NABC) Membership Code of Ethics

Preamble

As members of the National Association of Black Counselors (NABC), we are dedicated to the promotion of ethical behavior, professionalism, and the highest standards of counseling practice. This Code of Ethics serves as an additional guide to supplement local, state, and national ethical standards and laws governing our profession.

Principles and Values

Cultural Competence and Sensitivity:

NABC members embrace cultural competence and sensitivity. We recognize the significance of culturally relevant approaches in our practice, valuing diversity and acknowledging the unique experiences of Black individuals and communities.

Social Justice and Advocacy:

NABC members are committed to promoting social justice and advocating for the rights and well-being of marginalized and underserved populations, with a particular focus on the Black community.

Community Engagement and Outreach:

NABC members actively engage with and contribute to their local and broader communities, striving to address mental health disparities and provide accessible counseling services.

Anti-Discrimination and Inclusivity:

NABC members reject all forms of discrimination and actively work to create inclusive environments that celebrate diversity. We foster safe spaces where clients feel respected and valued.

Ethical Leadership:

NABC members demonstrate ethical leadership by upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in their professional roles and within the organization.

Continuing Education and Professional Growth:

NABC members are committed to ongoing professional development, seeking opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills to better serve clients and the community.

Confidentiality and Privacy:

NABC members are dedicated to safeguarding the confidentiality and privacy of client information, adhering to legal and ethical standards, and ensuring that clients' personal information is kept secure.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration:

NABC members collaborate effectively with other professionals and organizations to provide holistic care and support to clients, recognizing the interconnectedness of mental health with other aspects of well-being.

Conflict Resolution and Consultation:

NABC members actively engage in ethical decision-making processes, consulting with colleagues and supervisors when facing challenging ethical dilemmas to ensure the best interests of clients.

Professional Identity and Integrity:

NABC members maintain a professional identity that reflects the values, principles, and ethics of the counseling profession. We conduct ourselves with honesty and integrity at all times.

Enforcement and Accountability:

NABC is committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards within our organization. Violations of this Code of Ethics may result in disciplinary actions as outlined in NABC's policies and procedures, which are in line with local, state, and national regulations.

NABC places a strong emphasis on ethical conduct, professionalism, and a commitment to the well-being of the Black community and society at large. By adhering to this Code of Ethics, NABC members contribute to the promotion of ethical excellence in the field of counseling and the advancement of Black mental health.

This Code of Ethics serves as a framework to guide the ethical behavior of NABC members while complementing the ethical standards and requirements established by local, state, and national regulations, as well as The American Counseling Association Code of Ethics. It reinforces NABC's commitment to ethical conduct and the welfare of the Black community.
